NYC Department of Buildings (Green Roof Tax Abatement Program)

The Green Roof Property Tax Abatement provides a one-year tax abatement for the construction of a green roof on residential and commercial buildings in New York City. The green roof tax abatement is aligned with the City's long-term sustainability plan, PlaNYC.

In general, a green roof is an addition to a roof that includes, among other things, a growth medium and a vegetation layer of drought-resistant and hardy plants. Green roofs help improve stormwater management, provide insulation for the building, and lessen the urban heat island effect, which causes dense urban environments to have higher temperatures than other areas.

The tax abatement is equal to $5.23-$15.00 per square foot of green roof space depending on the Community District and last for one year. The benefit is capped at whichever is less: $200,000 or the amount of property taxes due for the building that tax year.

NYC Department of Small Business Services (NYC CoolRoofs Program)

The NYC CoolRoofs Program led by NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and The Hope Program provides New Yorkers with paid training and work experience installing energy-saving reflective rooftops. The program supports the City goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. This initiative is a partnership between the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS), its Workforce1 Industrial & Transportation Career Center, the Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice and The HOPE Program. Coating rooftops with a lighter color reduces roof temperatures, internal building temperatures, Urban Heat Island Effect , and carbon emissions, and improve air quality while extending the lifespan of rooftops and HVAC equipment.

Additionally, NYC CoolRoofs offers cool roof installations at no cost to select buildings, with priority given to non-profits and affordable housing.

Low-cost installations are offered to all other building owners that can cover the cost of the coating, which is provided at a discounted rate through vendors participating in the NYC CoolRoofs program. NYC CoolRoofs will provide the labor, technical assistance, and materials (e.g. paint brushes, rollers, gloves, etc.) at no charge if the building owner(s) pays for the coating.

NYC Department of Sanitation

The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY collects 24 million pounds of trash, recycling, and compostable material every day. We operate 59 district garages and manage a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines.

ecycleNYC is a convenient and free electronic waste collection and recycling service for residential buildings with 10 or more units. In partnership with Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), this service follows the strictest industry and environmental standards. We provide your building with a secure electronics collection bin or can arrange to pick up items from an internal storage location.

Curbside Composting - Curbside Composting service is now available to ALL NYC residents citywide. Compost is picked up every week on your recycling day.
